Mr. Long's Psyche Profile

Month Number 67:

New development in Scott's thinking. He relates Stephen Malkmus' guitar tone while touring with mid 90's Pavement to a term he calls "kelly."

"That just sounds so kelly, man, you know. It has a real kelly style. You hear that?"

Attempt to reach into Scott's profile for hypothesis of "kelly" term:

1. Scott's mother's name is Kelly.

2. Scott has said he thinks passingly of Kellogg's Corn Flakes while listening to live mid 90's Pavement concerts, particularly Malkmus' lead guitar.

This one time I was at Denny's with my sister and my girlfriend at the time, Sabrina. Sabrina has a tendency to get nosebleeds. A lot. I guess they fixed her or something now but she used to. Anyway as we're leaving the restaurant I whistled for a cab and when it came near, the license plate said "Fresh" and it had dice in the mirror! If anything I could say that this cab was rare but I thought, naw, forget it, yo home to Bel-Air!

I Want You

So I just looked at my current line-up of websites and realized that I'm bored shitless by all of them. I need some new ones, websites where I can waste hours and hours and hours.

Keep in mind that I already have the facebook. Also keep in mind that I find MySpace depressingly tacky.

Greg, the site that had the Andrew Bird concert was absolutely awesome. I've watched like 50 concerts so far. Andrew Bird himself was not very shabby at all.

Any suggestions?

An Honest Question

So, could there possibly be anything worse than a 28 track Red Hot Chili Peppers album? Ever?

I've just thought about it for a minute, and yeah, the events that took place on 9/11 were certainly more tragic.

But this comes in second.

Speaking of 9/11, here's an interesting story I've told everyone a million times. Bob Dylan's most recent album, "Love and Theft," was released on 9/11. And for like a fucking month beforehand I had this countdown on the whiteboard in homeroom. "20 more days!"

"10 more days!"

"2 more days!"

"IT'S COMING TOMMOROW!"

Pretty creepy.

"Return to the Sea" by Islands is one of the best albums I've ever heard.

I listened to it a first time, and was compelled to IMMEDIATELY listen to the whole thing again, this time with some internet lyric sheets. The sheer audacity of the lyrics, or what I thought I heard in the lyrics, drove me in.

I'm not gonna spoil any for you. They flow so effortlessly with the music that it'd be a crime.

This guy is the most fascinating lyricist I've heard in way, way too long.

And it seems to me, too, to be one of the most meticulously drummed albums I've heard.

Weird.

It's the best album I've heard in awhile.

Since Illinois, I guess.

But where Sufjan's album revealed its wonder over time and through understanding of the arrangements, this album provides a more IMMEDIATE cerebral hook.

Get the music any way you can.

A Better Poem

The Elephant, The Steam, The Island, The Water

Rumble on, Gray elephant
Through the streets of my city!
Our apartment trembled as you tore past
Kill, elephant, kill!
Shake these Hawaiians from their fumbling dream of life!

My father was washing clothes in the alley when the elephant came.
Steam from the dryer rose in the island heat and made my window damp
Rumble on, Gray Elephant!
You killed your trainer; I saw it on television!

I remember Mrs. Yamamoto who lived up the street
Alone in an apartment
She once took a swim with me out to Chinaman's Hat.
She drew a baby octopus from the water and dropped it on my head!
The elephant scared her so much she got both breasts removed!

Oh, I was young then,
Picturing myself a wave-wrangler, Lord of animal water!
Mother rubbed sunscreen over my squirming body
And I ran into the sea
Scared shitless by the occasional seaweed slap
Tongue burning from salt
Do you wait for me, Gray Elephant? Under the skin of this life are you throbbing? Counting the seconds and days? Your trainer plucked the dirt from your tusks, but you killed him, too. Can you see me? Will you toot your horn? Rumbling towards me in my blind spot, big as the Universe?

I'll tell you what song/movie reminds me of you.
3. I'll pick a flavor of jello to wrestle with you in.
4. I'll say something that only makes sense to you and me.
5. I'll tell you my first/clearest memory of you.
6. I'll tell you what animal you remind me of.
7. I'll ask you something that I've always wondered about you.

I've been bopping around HotorNot recently, and I am SICK AND TIRED of all these bitches putting "I'll try anything once!" in their profiles.

No, you wouldn't. You wouldn't try raping your grandfather. You woudn't try shit diving. You wouldn't try kitty strangling. You probably wouldn't even try crystal meth, you fucking pussy.

So shut up.

Lay Down Your Weary Tune

Oh, God.

And I say that not in vain, but in praise.

Aaron, that second half was revelatory. Like, eye-opening. He was the top of the mountain; the greatest artist there ever was. And it blew up. And he's still here.

Doesn't it just make you want to write 500 songs? And perform them in front of people, screaming them at the top of your lungs?
